Acclimation – to become accustomed to a new environment. (Webster’s definition)
Cattle undergo acclimation whenever their situation changes. This can be particularly stressful following weaning and when cattle arrive into feed yards. It is generally well understood that stress is detrimental to production and health. The handlers’ role during acclimation however, is not always well understood.
When handlers interact with cattle they are shaping the subsequent behavior of the cattle, whether the handler intends to or not. Instead of letting acclimation simply happen without guidance Cattlexpressions training teaches handlers how to become competent at guiding the acclimation process to successfully transition cattle to new environments and shape behavior in a positive manner. Successful acclimation can lead to improved health and behaviors that result in subsequent production events being labor efficient, low stress, time efficient and safe.

When moving the cowherd for any production event it is desirable to have the project completed without stress and with mutual understanding (between the cattle and their handlers). This is possible when the principles of low stress cattle handling are applied. Large numbers of cattle willingly move from pasture to pasture, through what some may consider challenging geography and enter corrals in a frame of mind that is ready and willing for the next project. Cattlexpressions can help handlers understand how to move large numbers of animals in a low stress manner.
